Freshman year for free? Yes! And yes, I mean FREE. No catches, no gimmicks, FREE!

If you have visited TGC’s for any length of time you know there are very few things that really get me fired up. I mean, over the top giddy, and I am so happy to share something with you that I am absolutely amazed over. In fact, I can’t believe I’ve only just heard about it!

Modern States Education Alliance is a non-profit dedicated to making a high quality college education free of cost and accessible to any person who seeks one. It’s founding principle is that access to affordable education is fundamental to any philosophy that respects all individuals, and fundamental to the American dream.

Yes, you read that right. Free of cost and accessible to any person.

WHAT?!?

I had the opportunity to speak with David Vise, Pulitzer Prize winner and the Executive Director of Modern States. He explained that they “want to make college more affordable and accessible for as many people as possible. He went on to say something we all know to be true,

“Too many people are left with the choice to not go to college OR take on a load of debt and we want to change that.”

Such a simple concept and yet few solutions seem within reach, until now.

The Low Down

Modern States has partnered with edX, the leading online learning platform founded by Harvard and MIT. Modern States also partners with others to develop more than 30 freshman college courses. Some of the best professors from top universities teach these classes. The courses include online lectures, quizzes, and tests. Likewise, textbooks and other needed material are provided online. For. FREE.

These courses help students prepare to pass ‘Advanced Placement’ (AP) or College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests. Some of the ones they offer now include classes such as History, Computer Science, Math, English and Economics.

Because of the flexibility offered this program is ideal for people working full time, those in the military, and (in my opinion) every single other person who is considering going to college.

Could this get any better? YES!

Not only do they provide the materials and the course so you can pass the AP or CLEP test and earn college credit. They also pay for it. THEY PAY FOR IT! Right now, they pay the $80 fee for the test you choose. They may not be able to offer this forever but you can take advantage of it now.

How Can They Do This?

I asked David how they were able to do all this. I can only imagine how much it must cost to pay to have the courses developed, much less pay for testing fees. He said that it’s all possible because a philanthropist named Steve Klinsky came up with the idea and has funded the program. Since getting started they have grown and are now an alliance that includes colleges, universities, and others. Over two million students attend colleges that have affiliated with Modern States Education Alliance so far.

It is an amazing opportunity for so many. David has assured me there are no catches or surprises or anything like that. They just want to help you get your degree while taking on as little debt as possible.
